About Us

Mission Statement: To provide to individuals, from any background, the wisdom of Vedanta and practical means for spiritual growth and happiness, enabling them to become a positive contributor to the society.

The Mission: The word 'Chinmaya' means 'true knowledge'. Chinmaya Mission is an organisation where seekers of Truth come together to acquire and impart the ancient teachings of the Upanishads.

Our Motto: To provide to individuals, from any background, the wisdom of Vedanta and practical means for spiritual growth and happiness, enabling them to become a positive contributor to the society.

The ‘Chinmaya Movement’, a movement whose purpose was to spread Vedantic knowledge to the world, began in December 1951 by Swami Chinmayananda. In 1953, an organization was started to structure this movement and became known as Chinmaya Mission. Since its founding in 1953, Chinmaya Mission has grown to include over 243 centers all over the world.

Chinmaya Mission is supported by three pillars of knowledge: Vedantic knowledge, cultural knowledge, and social service. Vedanta is the foundation of Hindu philosophy and a relevant supplement to any faith or culture. Chinmaya Mission does not ask that one converts to Hinduism, but instead asks that one studies Vedanta in order to participate in one’s own faith at a higher level. The second pillar of Chinmaya Mission requires one to understand the Indian culture. This is done through the arts, forums, temples, communications, and research. Spiritual retreats, public discourses, regular classes and study groups are all methods of spreading Vedantic and cultural knowledge. The final pillar requires that one must participate in social service to become a positive contributor to society. Members participate in many smaller local activities aimed at helping the underprivileged. However, the Mission has also participated in various large scale activities including the building of schools, homes, hospitals, the development of rural villages, libraries, and forests.
